Gold Earrings: Styles, Karats and Sizing

Gold Earrings: Styles, Karats and Sizing - Seattle Gold Grills

Hoops, huggies, studs and dangles explained, with 10K versus 14K advice for sensitive ears and how to pair earrings with your gold chains.

Earrings are the piece of gold everyone sees first — they frame the face, they work with everything from a suit to a t-shirt, and they're one of the most-bought categories we make. Here's how to choose gold earrings by style, karat, and size, and how to wear them with the rest of your gold.

The Core Styles

Hoops. The classic. Small hoops (10-20mm) read clean and professional; large hoops (30mm and up) read bold. Gold hoops in 10K and 14K hold their shape and polish for years of daily wear. Browse gold hoops and all earring styles.

Huggies. Small hoops designed to hug the lobe closely. The everyday workhorse: they don't snag on clothing, sleep in them comfortably, and stack well in second and third piercings.

Studs. The quietest option and the one that pairs with everything. Solid gold studs — plain, diamond-cut, or stone-set — are the standard first purchase and the piece people never stop wearing.

Drops and dangles. Anything that hangs and moves. These carry the most design detail and are the natural "statement earring" — for big-night gold, this is the category.

Which Karat for Earrings?

Earrings live in one of the least forgiving environments on the body — they pass through skin, meet hair products, and get handled constantly. 10K and 14K both have the alloy hardness that daily wear demands. If your ears are sensitive, 14K is the safer call: more pure gold, fewer alloy metals that can irritate. The full karat breakdown is in our 10K vs 14K guide.

One practical note: posts and backs matter as much as the face of the earring. Solid gold posts (not plated) are what you want in the piercing itself.

Sizing by Lobe and Look

  • Small lobes / first purchase: studs or 12-15mm huggies
  • Medium lobes / everyday: 15-25mm hoops
  • Large lobes or stretched styles: 25-40mm hoops sit in proportion
  • Layered piercings: stud in the first hole, huggie in the second, hoop up top — or run huggies all the way up

If you're buying as a gift and can't measure, huggies or small hoops are the safest size call.
