See how karat, gram weight and labor set the real price of gold jewelry, how to compare two quotes fairly, and what to ask before you buy.
Two jewelers can quote the "same" gold chain thousands of dollars apart, and both quotes can be honest. The difference usually isn't the gold — it's that most jewelry isn't sold in a way that lets you compare. Buying by the gram fixes that. This is how we price solid gold at Seattle Gold Grills, and how to use the same math anywhere you shop.
Gold is a commodity. A gram of 14K gold is a gram of 14K gold whether it's in a chain from us, a chain from a store in New York, or a chain from a dealer in Miami. When you know a piece's gram weight and its karat, you can price the metal itself and see exactly what you're paying for design, labor, and the seller's margin.
That's why we publish the gram weight on every solid gold product page. Our solid gold Miami Cuban chains, for example, list weight per inch, total weight per length, and the per-gram price.
1. Metal value. Set by karat: 10K is 41.7% pure gold, 14K is 58.3%, 18K is 75%. The rest is alloy, which adds durability (and, in yellow gold, the warm color). Our 10K vs 14K guide covers the karat trade-offs in detail.
2. Labor. A machine-made chain and a handmade Miami Cuban of the same weight take completely different amounts of work. Handmade links, matched one at a time and soldered by a bench jeweler, cost more to build — and hold up differently over decades. You can see the difference in the construction on any of our handmade Cuban product pages.
3. Margin. Every retailer adds one. The useful question isn't whether a margin exists, it's whether you can see what you're paying. A per-gram price makes the total transparent; a flat "asking price" on an unweighed chain doesn't.
Say two stores each offer a 20mm 14K solid Cuban at 20 inches. Ask both for the gram weight and divide:
Quote B isn't just more expensive — it's also 52 grams lighter. Same look, meaningfully less gold. Without the gram weight, both are just "a 20mm Cuban."
