Compare hollow and solid gold chain builds, see how much real gold each one actually holds, and learn what the price difference buys you.
At arm's length, a hollow gold chain and a solid gold chain can look identical: same width, same shine, same silhouette. The gold inside is not close. This is the single most important thing to understand before spending serious money on a chain, because the two builds can differ by as much as ten times in actual metal, and the price tags follow the metal, not the look.
Hollow chains are built as shells. Tubular links are formed from thin gold sheet, or links are electroformed around a mandrel that is later drained out. The result is a light, inexpensive-for-its-look chain with real gold walls and nothing inside them.
The tradeoffs are structural. Thin walls dent and kink under pressure, from a doorknob or a seatbelt as easily as a drop. Dents are hard to repair because there is little metal to work with, and a kinked hollow link can end the chain's life. None of this makes a hollow chain fake. It makes it a different product with different physics.
Our solid handmade 14K 20mm Miami Cuban at 20 inches weighs 552 grams, every one of them gold. A hollow chain of similar visual width can weigh roughly one-fifth to one-tenth as much. We will not print a hollow weight as if it were a spec, because hollow weights vary by maker; that range is the honest answer, and it is exactly why you should always ask for the exact gram weight before comparing prices.
You can check any answer you get against the published per-inch weights in our Miami Cuban width guide: a solid 14K 20mm is 27.6 grams per inch. If a "20mm" chain weighs a small fraction of 27.6 grams per inch, it is not solid, whatever the listing says.
At $160 per gram in 14K, every 100 grams is $16,000 of gold. That is why two quotes for the "same" 20mm chain can differ by tens of thousands of dollars: one is 552 grams of gold, the other is a shell holding a fraction of that. Neither seller is necessarily lying about the product; they are selling different products. Only the gram weight separates them. For the full method, read buying gold jewelry by the gram.
