How to Take a Grillz Mold at Home: Step-by-Step Impression Guide

How to Take a Grillz Mold at Home: Step-by-Step Impression Guide

You do not need to live near Renton to get a perfectly fitted set of grillz. Our remote fitting process has one job: get an exact impression of your teeth without you leaving your house. Here is exactly how the kit works, step by step, plus the mistakes that ruin impressions (and how we fix them for free when they happen).

What Arrives in the Kit

Every mold kit we ship contains:

  • Impression trays in a couple of sizes, so the tray matches your arch
  • Two-part impression putty (base and catalyst) that mixes into a mold material
  • Mixing tools and a step-by-step card
  • A prepaid return label — the kit ships to us free, so there is no shipping cost either way

If you are local, you can skip all of this and get molded in the shop at 15 S Grady Way, Ste 408 in Renton in about ten minutes.

Before You Start: 5 Minutes of Prep

  1. Brush and floss. A clean tooth surface makes a cleaner impression.
  2. No food or drink for 30 minutes. Saliva flow and leftover debris distort fine detail.
  3. Pick a bright, uncluttered spot with a mirror at eye level and a timer within reach.
  4. Lay everything out before opening the putty — once mixed, the clock is running.

The Impression, Step by Step

  1. Size the tray. The tray should cover all the teeth you want in the set, without pressing your cheeks or gums. Trim nothing; choose the size that fits.
  2. Equal parts putty. Knead equal amounts of the two putty colors together until the color is uniform — usually about 30–45 seconds of mixing. Uniform color means fully mixed; streaks mean unmixed spots that stay soft.
  3. Roll into a rope and load the tray. Press the mixed putty evenly along the tray, slightly higher at the front where the teeth are longest.
  4. Seat the tray in one motion. Line it up over your teeth, then press straight up (or down) and hold. Do not wiggle, reseat, or bite through the material — a single smooth seat captures the sharpest detail.
  5. Hold still for the full cure. Stay pressed for about 2–3 minutes with light, steady pressure. Keep your lips relaxed and try not to move your jaw, swallow heavily, or talk.
  6. Rock it out gently. Break the seal by rocking the tray corner to corner, never by prying one side straight down. A clean removal keeps the borders intact.
  7. Inspect it. A good impression shows crisp tooth outlines with no bubbles, gaps, or folds. If a tooth edge looks smeared or the putty pulled away, remold it — the kit includes spare putty for exactly this.
  8. Repeat for the second arch if you ordered a double set.

The Four Mistakes That Ruin Impressions

  • Mixing too long or too short. Overworked putty starts to set before it seats; under-mixed putty never fully hardens. Aim for 30–45 seconds of mixing.
  • Moving mid-cure. Talking or readjusting during the 2–3 minute hold blurs the tooth detail.
  • Partial coverage. A tray that misses a back tooth means the set will not cover it. Match the tray to the full span of your planned set.
  • Hot drinks right before molding. Heat swells gum tissue slightly and changes detail. Give it 30 minutes.

Bad Impression? It Costs You Nothing

If the impression comes back unusable, we send a fresh kit and you try again — no charge, no penalty. That is one reason every custom piece is quoted from your actual impression and not a fixed price: the fit is only as good as the mold, and we would rather remold than ship a set that does not click.

What Happens After You Mail It Back

  1. We scan and verify the impression the day it arrives and contact you if anything looks off.
  2. Your piece is cast in real metal — solid gold or solid silver, never plated — and finished by hand.
  3. Fitting and polish. Every piece is hand-fitted to the impression and polished before it ships.
  4. Shipping back to you, with tracking, typically about 3 weeks total from approved impression depending on design complexity and stone work

The whole time you can check the status through your account — and if you have questions mid-build, call or text 206-250-0833.

The Bottom Line

At-home molds are not a compromise — with the right kit and three minutes of holding still, they capture the same detail an in-shop molding does. Order your custom gold grillz or a silver starter piece, request the kit, and mail it back on us. Renton locals can always skip the line and get molded at the shop — book an appointment and it takes ten minutes.
